British had first arrived in the Malaya States in 1591, which was in Penang. In the 1670s, knowing that the Sultan of Kedah had some conflict and in need of help, they persuaded the Sultan to give up Penang to the British in return for some favors. The British had colonized Penang and established a trading post for the East India Company which they were further on colonizing Singapore, Malacca, and Labuan and these states had become the Straits Settlement.
